Communicate 2 - Synchronous Sessions

Communicate 2 - Synchronous Sessions
Reflect: Reflect upon the importance of utilizing a synchronous session to “create a true classroom culture” online.
Answer: How does integrating synchronous learning sessions within the online environment assist in developing a learning community for students? Discuss this question at length in your blog.

ArtifactCreate an outline or lesson plan of a 30 minute synchronous session which you would facilitate.
  1. What activities would you include?  The main material would be a powerpoint created to support the content of the unit. This can involve grammar and vocabulary. First I would "present" the material or concept in the powerpoint. Then I would have guided practice so that students have the opportunity to practice the concept. Within this powerpoint I would embed short videos to reiterate the topic.  I would also use the "poll" feature of the online course to get students' feedback. Within the live session, students can use the features of the online course (write comments, speak comments and even write on the "whiteboard"). Students benefit from using the online drawing tools to collaborate.
  2. What transitions are needed?  First I would present the information to students. Then I would allow them to ask questions. After that I would provide guided practice and ask if students have more questions.
  3. How might you use the session as a formative assessment? Based on student's responses in the guided practice section, I would be able to go over specific topics or points and reteach those so that students can master the topic.
  4. How would your session a build learning community among your students? Students would be able to interact with each other in the "chat" session. They can see the responses posted and also provide suggestions to help their classmates.  this is a useful way for students to realize that others may have similar struggles or difficulties. It can build a sense of camaraderie and support.
